At 19/3 Bowbazar Street (old address), Bengal Photographers Studio was located on the first floor. The staircase to the first floor had to be accessed through the narrow alley seen on the right side of the house in the picture. Thakur Sri Ramakrishna reached the first-floor stairs through this narrow alley.

On 10th December 1881, Surendranath Mitra escorted Thakur Sri Ramakrishna to Bengal Photographers’ Studio which was then located on the first floor of this house to show how photography is done. After showing him the technique of photography, a picture of Thakur in the standing position was taken here in this studio on that day (10th December 1881). Thakur went into Samadhi (ecstasy) while being photographed. This is the second photo of SriSri Thakur.
At the initiative of Brahmo Samaj leader Sri Keshab Chandra Sen, the first picture of Thakur Sri Ramakrishna was taken by the photographer of this Bengal Photographers Studio on 21st September 1879 at his residence at Kamal-Kutir in Rajabazar area of North Calcutta.
The building formerly at 19/3, Bowbazar Street still exists today, though its address has changed to 19B, Bipin Bihari Ganguly Street. Bengal Photographers Studio, which no longer exists, was on the first floor, and the old staircase leading to it was accessed through a narrow alley on the right side of the house.
Thakur Sri Ramakrishna walked down the narrow alley and took the old staircase to get to the studio on the first floor of the house.
In this context, the details mentioned in page nos. 1015/1016 ** and 1018/1019 ** of ‘The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna’ – Volume-2 by Swami Nikhilananda (Indian Edition by Sri Ramakrishna Math, Mylapore, 24th Reprint, January 2022) are as follows:
** (Page 1015/1016) – “About three o’clock in the afternoon Sri Ramakrishna arrived at Manomohan’s house. He rested there awhile and had some refreshments. Surendra took the Master in a carriage to the studio of the Bengal Photographer. The art of photography was explained to him, and he was shown how glass covered with silver nitrate takes the image. As the Master was being photographed he went into samadhi.
A little later Sri Ramakrishna arrived at Rajendra Mitra’s house.”
** (Page 1018/1019) – “While preparations were being made to give the guests something to eat, Sri Ramakrishna talked with Keshab.
MASTER (with a smile): “Today I enjoyed very much the machine by which a man’s picture is taken. One thing I noticed was that the impression doesn’t stay on a bare piece of glass, but it remains when the glass is stained with a black solution. In the same way, mere hearing of spiritual talk doesn’t leave any impression. People forget it soon afterwards. But they can retain spiritual instruction if they are stained inside with earnestness and devotion.”
This photo of Thakur Sri Ramakrishna is his second photo, which was shot at Bengal Photographer’s Studio in Radhabazar (Near Dalhousie Square, Calcutta) on 10th December 1881.

১৮৮১ সালের ১০ই ডিসেম্বর উত্তর কলিকাতার রাধাবাজার অঞ্চলে অবস্থিত এই বেঙ্গল ফটোগ্রাফার্স সটুডিওতে শ্রীশ্রীঠাকুরকে তাঁর গৃহীভক্ত সুরেন্দ্রনাথ মিত্র ফটো কিরূপে তোলা হয় সেটি দেখাইতে লইয়া আসেন। অতঃপর, ওই দিন (১০ই ডিসেম্বর, ১৮৮১) এই সটুডিওতে শ্রীশ্রীঠাকুরের দণ্ডায়মান অবস্থায় একটি ফটো তোলা হইয়াছিল। ফটো তুলিবার সময় ঠাকুর সমাধিস্থ ছিলেন। এইটি ছিল শ্রীশ্রীঠাকুরের দ্বিতীয় আলোকচিত্র।
ঠাকুর শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণের প্রথম চিত্রটি ব্রাহ্মহ্মসমাজের নেতা শ্রী কেশবচন্দ্র সেনের উদ্যোগে, এই বেঙ্গল ফোটোগ্রাফার্স সটুডিওর চিত্রগ্রাহকের দ্বারাই ১৮৭৯ সালের ২১শে সেপ্টেম্বর উত্তর কলিকাতায় রাজাবাজার অঞ্চলে তাঁর নিজগৃহে কমলকুটিরে গৃহীত হইয়াছিল।
১৯/৩ বহুবাজার স্ট্রীটের (বর্তমান ঠিকানা, ১৯ বি. বিপিন বিহারী গাঙ্গুলী স্ট্রীট) এই বাড়িতেই বেঙ্গল ফোটোগ্রাফার্স সটুডিওটি একসময় অবস্থিত ছিল, সেই বাড়িটি আজও বিদ্যমান। সটুডিওটি এই বাড়িটির দ্বিতলে অবস্থিত ছিল এবং বাড়িটির দ্বিতলে উঠিবার পুরানো সিঁড়িটি ব্যবহার করতে হইলে এই বাড়িটির ডান পার্শ্বে যে সরু গলি দেখা যাইতেছে সেই স্থান দিয়া ওই সিঁডির নিকট যাইতে হইতো।
ঠাকুর শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ যে সময় এই সটুডিওতে শুভাগমন করিয়াছিলেন তখন তিনিও এই পথ দিয়াই ওই পুরাতন সিঁড়ি ব্যবহার করিয়া এই বাড়ির দ্বিতলে অবস্থিত তদানীন্তন বেঙ্গল ফটোগ্রাফার্স সটুডিওতে আসিয়া উপস্থিত হইয়াছিলেন।
এই প্রসঙ্গে ‘শ্রীশ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ কথামত’ গ্রন্থে (প্রথম সংস্করণ [অখন্ড], ৩৪তম পুনর্মুদ্রণ, ২০১২, পৃষ্ঠা: ১১০৮ ** ও ১১১০ **) ১৮৮১ সালের ১০ই ডিসেম্বর তারিখে ‘শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ রাজেন্দ্রের বাড়িতে’ উল্লেখিত বিবরণ :
** (পৃষ্ঠা: ১১০৮) – “বেলা ৩টার সময় মনোমোহনের বাটিতে শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ আসিয়াছেন। সেখানে বিশ্রাম করিয়া একটু জলযোগ করিলেন। সুরেন্দ্র বলিতেছেন আপনি কল দেখবেন বলেছিলেন – চলুন। তাঁহাকে গাড়ি করিয়া সুরেন্দ্র বেঙ্গল ফটোগ্রাফারের সটুডিওতে লইয়া গেলেন। ফটোগ্রাফার দেখাইলেন কিরূপে ছবি তোলা হয়। কাঁচের পেছনে কালি (Silver Nitrate) মাখান হয়; তারপর ছবি উঠে। ঠাকুরের ছবি লওয়া হইতেছে- অমনি তিনি সমাধিস্থ হইলেন। এইবার ঠাকুর রাজেন্দ্র মিত্রের বার্টিতে আসিয়াছেন। রাজেন্দ্র পুরাতন ডেপুটি ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট।”
** (পৃষ্ঠা ১১১০): শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ ও ভক্তদের খাওয়ার জন্য রোজেন্দ্র মিত্রের বাড়ির) দ্বিতলে উদ্যোগ হইতেছে। এখনও তিনি প্রাঙ্গনে বসিয়া কেশবের সহিত কথা কহিতেছেন। রাধাবাজারে ফটোগ্রাফারদের ওখানে গিয়াছিলেন – সেই সব কথা।
শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ: (কেশবের প্রতি সহাস্যে) – ” আজ বেশ কলে ছবি তোলা দেখে এলুম। একটি দেখলুম যে শুধু কাচের উপর ছবি থাকে না। কাচের পিঠে একটা কালি মাখিয়ে দেয় তবে ছবি থাকে। তেমনি ঈশ্বরীয় কথা শুধু শুনে যাচ্ছি তাতে কিছু হয় না, আবার তৎক্ষণাৎ ভুলে যায়। যদি ভিতরে অনুরাগ ভক্তিরূপ কালি মাখান থাকে তবে সে কথাগুলি ধারণা হয়। নচেৎ শুনে আর ভুলে যায়।”
