Surendra Nath Mitra got the above painting made by commissioning an expert artist (the signature on the painting is of U.Ray). Mahendranath Gupta (Sri M) described this painting on a 42″ × 30″ canvas as ‘Navabidhan’ (new dispensation) in which Thakur Sri Ramakrishna is pointing out to Keshav Chandra Sen that people of different religions proceed through different paths to the same goal. Since, Thakur used to refer the painting as ‘Surendrar Pot’ – ‘সুরেন্দ্রর পট’ (painting of Surendra), the same came to be known later by that name
সুরেন্দ্রনাথ মিত্র একজন দক্ষ শিল্পীর (খুব সম্ভবত U. Ray, কারণ এই নামটি চিত্রের উপর স্বাক্ষরিত) দ্বারা উপরের চিত্রটি অঙ্কন করাইয়াছিলেন। সর্বধর্মসমন্বয়ের ভাব অবলম্বনে, ৪২” × ৩০” ক্যানভাসের উপর অঙ্কিত এই চিত্রটিকে মহেন্দ্রনাথ গুপ্ত (শ্রীম) ‘নববিধান’ নামে বর্ণনা করেন। চিত্রে ঠাকুর শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ কেশব চন্দ্র সেনকে অঙ্গুলি নির্দেশ করিয়া দেখাইতেছেন, বিভিন্ন ধর্মাবলম্বীরা বিভিন্ন পথ অবলম্বন করিয়া শেষ পর্যন্ত একই লক্ষ্যে উপনীত হন। যেহেতু ঠাকুর চিত্রটিকে ‘সুরেন্দ্রর পট’ বলিতেন, সেই নামেই চিত্রটি ভক্তদের মধ্যে পরিচিত।
Surendranath Mitra’s House
Surendranath Mitra’s house, adjacent to Gaurmohan Mukherjee Street (behind the Oxford Mission), was in close proximity to Swamiji’s ancestral house in Simulia. On several occasions, this house has been sanctified by footprints of Thakur Sri Ramakrishna. Surendranath Mitra was one of the ‘rasaddars’ or suppliers of material needs of Sri Ramakrishna. Surendranath Mitra used to organise Annapurna Puja and Jagaddhatri Puja at his residence anually. Sri Ramakrishna first visited Surendranath’s house in the evening time, sometime during the month of June or July in the year 1881. Later that year, in the month of November, Sri Ramakrishna met Narendranath (Swami Vivekananda) in this house. That day, Narendranath had sung devotional songs, which were immensely enjoyed by Thakur Sri Ramakrishna. This event has been recorded in both Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita and Lilaprasanga. In the Kathamrita, it has been recorded that on 27th October 1882, Sri Ramakrishna again came to Surendranath’s residence, while he was returning back to Dakshineshwar after his famous steamer ride with the well known Brahmo leader Keshab Chandra Sen. Although Surendranath was not available on that day, Thakur watched ‘Surendrar Pot’ (painting of Surendra) at his residence. Soon, on 19th November 1882, Sri Ramakrishna visited Surendranath’s residence on the occasion of Jagaddhatri Puja. The next year, Sri Ramakrishna revisited this place on the occasion of Annapurna Puja on 15th April 1883 and on 2nd August 1884 during Jhulan-Yatra celebrations. There is no sign of this house now as the place had to be demolished during the time of construction of Vivekananda Road.

সিমুলিয়াতে নরেন্দ্রনাথের বাড়ির অতি নিকটেই, গৌরমোহন মুখার্জী স্ট্রিট সংলগ্নে (অক্সফোর্ড মিশন স্কুলের পশ্চাতে) অৰস্থিত সুরেন্দ্রনাথ মিত্রের বাড়িতে শ্রীশ্রীঠাকুর কয়েকবার শুভাগমন করিয়াছেন। ঠাকুর শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণের ভক্ত অন্যতম রসদদার ছিলেন সুরেন্দ্রনাথ মিত্র । তাঁর এই বাড়িতে অন্নপূর্ণা পূজা ও জগদ্ধাত্রী পূজা হইত এবং এই বাড়িতে ঠাকুর শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ সর্বপ্রথম পদাৰ্পণ করেন ১৮৮১ সালের আষাঢ় (জুন – জুলাই) মাসের এক সন্ধ্যায়। ওই বছরের (১৮৮১) নভেম্বর মাসে সুরেন্দ্রনাথের এই গৃহে ঠাকুর সর্বপ্রথম নরেন্দ্রনাথকে (স্বামী বিবেকানন্দ) প্রত্যক্ষ করিয়াছিলেন এবং তাঁর গান শুনিয়াছিলেন, যা শ্রীশ্রীরামকৃষ্ণকথামৃত ও শ্রী শ্রী রামকৃষ্ণলীলাপ্রসঙ্গ গ্রন্থে উল্লেখিত হইয়াছে। এছাড়াও, শ্রীশ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ কথামৃত গ্রন্থে উল্লেখ করা হইয়াছে যে ১৮৮২ সালের ২৭শে অক্টোবর কেশবচন্দ্র সেন ও অন্যান্য ব্রাহ্ম ভক্তদের সহিত ঠাকুর শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ স্টীমারে দক্ষিণেশ্বর হইতে কলিকাতার জগন্নাথ ঘাটে এসে নামিয়াছিলেন এবং এই স্থান হইতে দক্ষিণেশ্বর ফিরিবার পথে ঠাকুর সিমুলিয়াতে সুরেন্দ্রনাথের এই বাড়ি আসিয়া, ‘সুরেন্দ্রের পট’ প্রত্যক্ষ করিয়াছিলেন , সেদিন সুরেন্দ্র নিজগৃহে অনুপস্থিত ছিলেন। এর এক মাসের মধ্যেই ৺জগদ্ধাত্রী পূজা উপলক্ষ্যে ১৯শে নভেম্বর ১৮৮২, শ্রী শ্রী ঠাকুর পুনরায় এই গৃহে শুভাগমন করেন। এর পরের বছর, ১৮৮৩ সালের ১৫ই এপ্রিল ৺অন্নপূর্ণা পূজার দিন ঠাকুর শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ এই বাটিতে শুভাগমন করিয়াছিলেন ও ১৮৮৪ সালের ২রা আগষ্ট ঝুলনযাত্রা উপলক্ষ্যে সুরেন্দ্রনাথ মিত্রের এই গৃহে শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ শুভ পদার্পণ করিয়াছিলেন।
বর্তমানে এই বাড়িটিও ভাঙ্গা হইয়াছে এবং এর কোন অস্তিত্ব নাই।

Location of Surndranath Mitra’s house has been shown by a red dot. The house has been demolished at the time of construction of Vivekananda Road. Surendra Mitra was childless. The descendants of his elder brother’s family live in a house in Shyampukur Street. ‘Surendrar Pot’ – ‘সুরেন্দ্রর পট’ (painting of Surendra) is with this family now.
