Jaygopal Sen’s House

Sri Ramakrishna sanctified this house of Jaygopal Sen at Bara Bazar, one of the prominent Brahmo devotees of his time, at around 7 pm on 28.11.1883. In Jaygopals house, Sri Ramakrishna engaged in spiritual discussions, sang ‘Bhajans’ (devotional songs) with the devotees present there, and inspired them to move ahead on the spiritual path.* Prior to this visit, he had visited the ailing Keshab Chandra Sen at his residence ‘Kamal Kutir’ at Rajabazar. It is to be noted that this was Sri Ramakrishna’s last meeting with Keshab Chandra Sen, as the Brahmo leader left for his heavenly abode on 8.1.1884. This meeting has been recorded in the Kathamrita.* It is interesting to note that Sri Ramakrishna’s first meeting with Keshab Chandra Sen also took place in the presence of Jaygopal Sen at the latter’s garden house ‘Tapovan’ at Belgharia (No.8 B.T. Road) on 15th March 1875.

“At ‘Tapovan‘, the Garden House of Brahmo Devotee Jayagopal Sen which was located 7 miles north of Calcutta in Belgharia (8, B. T. Road, Belgharia, Rathtala, Calcutta – 56), Keshav Chandra Sen established ‘Bharat Ashram’ on 5.2.1872.
According to the reports published in the old ‘Dharmatattva’ weekly, Thakur Sri Ramakrishna first visited this place spontaneously and then at the invitation of Keshav Chandra Sen, appeared there at least six (6) times on these dates : (15/3/1875, 14/5/1875, 21/1/1878, 24.1.1879, 15/9/1879 and 27/11/1880). জয়গোপাল সেনের বাড়ি

২৮-১১-১৮৮৩ (২৮শে নভেম্বর ১৮৮৩) তারিখে সন্ধ্যায় ৭ ঘটিকায় শ্রীশ্রীঠাকুর বড়বাজারে তাঁর ব্রাহ্ম ভক্তদের অন্যতম জয়গোপাল সেনের এই বাড়িতে শুভাগমন করিয়াছিলেন এবং ভক্তসঙ্গে, ভগবৎ প্রসঙ্গ ও ভজন করিয়া গৃহস্থ ভক্তদের উৎসাহ দিয়াছিলেন।* এই বাড়িতে শুভাগমনের পূর্বে, ঠাকুর শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ সেইদিন বৈকালে অসুস্থ কেশবচন্দ্র সেনকে দেখিতে তাঁর রাজাবাজারের বাড়ী ‘কমলকুটিরে’ গিয়াছিলেন। এটি ছিল কেশব চন্দ্র সেনের সঙ্গে শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণের শেষ সাক্ষাৎ। কারণ, এর কিছুদিনের মধ্যেই, ১৮৮৪ সালের ৮ই জানুয়ারী কেশব চন্দ্র সেন দেহত্যাগ করেন। ঘটনাটি সমাপতন বলে মনে হবে, কারণ কেশব চন্দ্র সেনের সঙ্গে শেষ সাক্ষাতের দিনেও ঠাকুর শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ জয়গোপাল সেনের উত্তর কলিকাতার বড়বাজার অঞ্চলের বাড়িতে শুভাগমন করিয়াছিলেন এবং এই জয়গোপাল সেনের বেলঘরিয়ার উদ্যানবাটি ‘তপোবনে’ (৮নং বি.টি. রোড) ১৮৭৫ সালের ১৫ই মার্চ, ঠাকুর শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ উপস্থিত হইয়া কেশবচন্দ্র সেনের সহিত সর্বপ্রথম সাক্ষাৎ ও আলাপ করিয়াছিলেন।

“কলিকাতা হইতে ৭ মাইল উত্তরে বেলঘরিয়ায় ব্রাহ্ম ভক্ত জয়গোপাল সেনের ‘তপোবন ’ উদ্যানবাটিতে (৮, বি. টি. রোড, বেলঘড়িয়া , রথতলা, কলিকাতা – ৭০০ ০৫৬), কেশব চন্দ্র সেন ৫।২।১৮৭২ তারিখে ‘ভারত আশ্রম’ স্থাপন করিয়াছিলেন।
পুরাতন ‘ধর্মতত্ত্ব’ সাপ্তাহিকে প্রকাশিত বিবরণ হইতে জানা যায় যে ঠাকুর শ্রীরামকৃষ্ণ প্রথমে স্বতঃপ্রবৃত্ত হইয়া এবং পরে কেশববাবুর নিমন্ত্রণে অন্ততঃ ছয় (৬) বার : (১৫।৩।১৮৭৫, ১৪।৫|১৮৭৫ , ২১।১।১৮৭৮, ২৪।১।১৮৭৯, ১৫।৯|১৮৭৯ এবং ২৭।১১।১৮৮০) তারিখে সেখানে উপস্থিত হইয়া তাঁহার সহিত মিলিত হইয়া ধর্মপ্রসঙ্গ করিয়াছিলেন (বি ৪৮।১।৪৬-৪৭)।।” **
