Fort William
This fort in Kolkata located on the eastern bank of the Ganges is named after King William III. The Fort is of the shape of an irregular octagon with an area of 5 km2. The armoury in the fort is worthy of special mention. Sri Sri Thakur visited the fort with Mathur Babu.The visit has been mentioned in Kathamrita on 25th December 1884. Thakur said that spiritual practice from home is easy and convenient for the householders. Comparing home with the fort, Thakur explained that the home provides all help and protection to the householders in the same way as the fort provides to the soldiers in their fight against enemies.
According to the description in Punthi (‘Sri Ramakrishna Punthi’ authored by Akshay Kumar Sen), the Sikh soldiers while marching towards the fort saw Sri Sri Thakur coming from the opposite direction in a Fitton car with Mathur Babu. They immediately left aside the guns and prostrated on the ground in utter reverence shouting “Joy Guru (Glory to Guru,the spiritual master)”. Their commander-in-chief was annoyed and asked for explanation for the gross violation of military rules.The soldiers replied that they have only followed the Sikh custom of expression of respect at the first sight of the Guru. The word ‘Kella’ (fort) has been used by Sri Sri Thakur in many instances. He used to describe Dakshineswar Kalibari as ‘Ma Kalir Kella’ (the fort of Mother Kali) and the house of Balram Basu as his second fort.

রাজা তৃতীয় উইলিয়মের নামে কলিকাতার এই কেল্লা গঙ্গার পূর্বতীরে অবস্থিত। ইহা অসম অষ্টভুজাকৃতির। আয়তন ৫ বর্গ কিলোমিটার। ইহার অস্ত্রাগার বিশেষ দ্রষ্টব্য। মথুরবাবুর সহিত শ্রীশ্রীঠাকুর এই কেল্লা দেখিয়াছিলেন।
কথামৃতে ২৫-৫-১৮৮৪ তারিখে ইহার উল্লেখ আছে। সংসারীর পক্ষে ঈশ্বরের সাধন গৃহে থাকিয়াই সুবিধাজনক। এই প্রসঙ্গে গৃহকে কেল্লার সঙ্গে তুলনা করিয়া বলিয়াছেন, যেমন কেল্লা হইতে যুদ্ধ করিলে কেল্লার অনেক সাহায্য পাওয়া যায়। পুঁথিতে আছে মথুরবাবুর সঙ্গে ফিটন গাড়িতে শ্রীশ্রীঠাকুরকে আসিতে দর্শন করিয়া শিখ সৈন্যরা ইংরেজ সেনাধ্যক্ষের অধীনে কেল্লাভিমুখে গমন কালে পথে অস্ত্রশস্ত্র ত্যাগ করিয়া ইউনিফর্ম পরা অবস্থাতেই ‘জয় গুরু’ বলিয়া তাঁহাকে ভুলুণ্ঠিত হইয়া প্রণাম করিয়াছিল। সেনাধ্যক্ষ তাঁহার অনুমতি ব্যতীত তাহাদের এরূপ কাজের জন্য প্রশ্ন করিলে, তাহারা উত্তর দিয়াছিল ইহাই শিখদের গুরুদর্শনে গুরুর প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা জানানোর চিরাচরিত রীতি।
‘কেল্লা’ শব্দটির ব্যবহার শ্রীশ্রীঠাকুর কয়েকক্ষেত্রে করিয়াছেন। দক্ষিণেশ্বর কালীবাড়িকে ‘মা কালীর কেল্লা’ ও বলরাম ভবনকে তাঁহার দ্বিতীয় কেল্লা বলিয়া অভিহিত করিয়াছিলেন।
