The zamindars and other respectable people of this village used to feel very happy visiting the temple of Dakshineswara. They were particularly impressed and captivated by listening to spiritual discourses of Sri Ramakrishna as well as community singing of hymns (Kirtan).

This church, associated with the Protestant Christian community is located in the BaithakKhana area of Central Calcutta. In Dakshineswar, while practicing Christianity for three consecutive days, Thakur had a vision of Jesus Christ in Panchavati. He saw Jesus the God-Man embracing him and finally merged into his body. Thakur entered into a state of ecstasy (Bhav Samadhi) and lost normal consciousness. He prayed to Goddess Jagadamba to fulfill his wish to observe how the Christians pray.
Sri Ramakrishna, accompanied by Rakhal and several other devotees, came to Calcutta in a carriage and called for M. at the school where he was teaching. Then they all set out for the Maidan. Sri Ramakrishna wanted to see the Wilson Circus. As the carriage rolled along the crowded Chitpore Road, his joy was very great. Like a little child he leaned first out of one side of the carriage and then out of the other, talking to himself as if addressing the passers-by. To M. he said: “I find the attention of the people fixed on earthly things. They are all rushing about for the sake of their stomachs. No one is thinking of God.”
The picture of Thakur Sri Ramakrishna known as ‘Shrine Picture’ which is worshipped in homes and temples was shot in the north-western side of Vishnu Mandir (RadhaKanta Temple).
The house of Nabin Chandra Roy Chowdhury of the famous Sabarna Chowdhury family was in Dakshineswar village. Thakur used to go to this house of Yogindra’s (Swami Yogananda’s) father to listen to readings from mythology or scriptures etc.

It was next to an oven in the Dhenkishala (shed in which a husking paddle is fixed). The present temple is built on top of this birthplace. In this temple, a white stone idol of Sri Sri Thakur Sri Ramakrishna is placed on a stone altar and in front of the altar, a replica of the dhenki (husking paddle) and the oven are inscribed.
In the courtyard of the house and to the west of Sri Ramakrishna’s birthplace is the temple of Family Deity Lord Raghuvir.
The temple has Rameshwar Shiv Linga, Raghuvir Shila and Shitala Ghat (sacred pot). They are regularly worshipped in this temple. Earlier, the temple was made of mud. Later, it has been built with bricks. At present, this temple also have Narayan Shila and Lakshmi Ghat (sacred pot).
The mud house with the verandah is to the north of the temple of Raghubir Jiu. Sri Ramakrishna used to sleep in this house. It is still preserved as his bedroom. The thatched roof, earthen walls, and clean floors have been preserved as it was before.
Shiva Temple of Yugis to the north of Sri Ramakrishna’s house. Sri Sri Thakur was born from the Divyajyoti in waves like air, emanated from the lingam idol of Mahadeva in this temple, and entered the body of Chandra Devi standing in front of the temple. In the north-east corner of this temple was the house of Madhu Yugi.
