Alipore Zoo
It is mentioned in the memoirs of Shivnath Shastri Mahasaya that once when he visited Thakur in Dakshineswar, Sri Sri Thakur wanted him to take him to the zoo to see a lion. Thakur slipped into transcendental consciousness while saying, “lion is the carrier of Goddess Durga.” Because of some important engagement, Shastri Mahasaya himself could not accompany Thakur on that day all the way to the zoo. He brought him upto Sukia Street in his car and sent him from there to the zoo under care of Narendranath.
In Kathamrita (24th December 1884), Thakur said, “They took me to show the zoo. As soon as I saw the lion, I went into Samadhi. Lion the carrier of the Mother awakened in my mind the consciousness of Mother Herself. Who could see the other animals in that state ? I had to return home after seeing only the lion.” In this zoo spread over an area of about 40 acres, there is a huge collection of different species of wild animals.

আলিপুর চিড়িয়াখানা
শিবনাথ শাস্ত্রী মহাশয়ের স্মৃতি কথায় আছে একবার তিনি দক্ষিণেশ্বরে আসিলে শ্রীশ্রীঠাকুর তাঁহাকে চিড়িয়াখানার সিংহ দেখাইবার জন্য অনুরোধ করেন। “সিংহ জগজ্জননী দেবী দুর্গার বাহন” বলিতে বলিতে তাঁহার মধ্যে এক অতিন্দ্রীয় অনুভূতি জাগ্রত হইল। সেদিন শাস্ত্রীমহাশয়ের জরুরী কাজ থাকায় নিজে যাইতে পারেন নাই। সুকিয়া স্ট্রীট পর্যন্ত শ্রীশ্রীঠাকুরকে গাড়িতে লইয়া আসিয়া নরেন্দ্রনাথের দায়িত্বে তাঁহাকে চিড়িয়াখানায় পাঠান। কথামৃতে ২৪-২-১৮৮৪ তারিখের বিবরণে আছে — ‘চিড়িয়াখানা দেখাতে লয়ে গিছলো। সিংহ দর্শন করেই আমি সমাধিস্থ হয়ে গেলাম। ঈশ্বরীয় বাহনকে দেখে ঈশ্বরীয় উদ্দীপন হলো। — তখন আর অন্য জানোয়ার কে দেখে। সিংহ দেখেই ফিরে এলাম।’ প্রায় চল্লিশ একর পরিমিত স্থানে এই চিড়িয়াখানাতে অনেক প্রকারের বন্য প্রাণীর সংগ্রহ আছে।
